Baseball Chiefs Return from Florida to Claim Top Spot

After a series of games and scrimmages in Florida during the majority of the past two weeks, the Iroquois varsity baseball team got back to local action last week. The team was nearly flawless in its matchups between the cities of St. Augustine and Jacksonville, with good defensive play and double-digit runs in almost every matchup in the Sunshine State.

Three teams entered the week undefeated in division play in ECIC III, with Iroquois, Lake Shore and Depew all with no losses in the seven-team division. With all three undefeated teams in action April 29, Iroquois emerged as the only unbeaten remaining atop ECIC III with a 3-0 division record.

While the Chiefs knocked off previously unbeaten Lake Shore by a 4-1 margin on the road, crosstown East Aurora took care off Depew with a 12-4 win to help the Chiefs. Lake Shore dropped to 1-1 in division play while Depew fell to 3-1.

Pitching has been Iroquois’ strength so far this season and it continued against the Lake Shore Eagles. Senior Billy Quinn got the start on the mound and went the entire seven innings and recorded eight strikeouts in allowing just a single earned run.

One of two Nick Bowen hits brought in the game’s first run early-on and Nick Partsch upped the lead with an RBI double for all the runs Iroquois would need. Bryce Yorke would bring in a late-inning run with a single to pad the Iroquois lead.

Other hitters for Iroquois were Tyler Birdd, Cory Day and Birch Herring-Jackson, with the latter belting a double for the Chiefs.

Iroquois has yet to host a home game, but that should change this week. With weather permitting, the Chiefs are scheduled to host Maryvale on April 30, followed by home contests against East Aurora on May 3 and Cheektowaga on May 6 before heading back on the road.
