Bookworm to Host Signing for New Guide to Secret WNY Hikes

A new book by Bruce Kershner, Jennifer Hillman, and William McKeever with photographs and illustrations by Bruce Kershner and Courtney Grim titled Secret Places of Western New York: 25 Scenic Hikes guides outdoor enthusiasts and nature explorers to discover secret and scenic day hikes within a day’s driving distance from Buffalo and Niagara Falls.

A presentation and book signing will be open to the public at The Bookworm, 34 Elm Street, East Aurora, N.Y. on Saturday, April 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Lifetime locals and visitors to the region will be guided to 25 of the best little-known paths and trails along the scenic trails of the Niagara, Buffalo, Rochester and Southern Tier regions.

As executive director of the Buffalo Audubon Society, co-author William McKeever worked with co-authors Hillman and Kreshner to form a comprehensive guide to outdoor adventures that appeal to a range of abilities, with most hikes accessible for the whole family.

Bruce Kershner (4/17/50–2/16/07) was a naturalist, ecologist, educator, and author. He authored dozens of books, most notably Secret Places: Scenic Treasures of Western New York and Southern Ontario. Kershner was named “Environmentalist of the Year” by the Sierra Club, the Adirondack Mountain Club, and New York State. McKeever and Kershner worked together before his death on environmental advocacy projects to protect the old-growth forests of DeVeaux Woods, Zoar Valley, and Allegany State Park.

The authors encourage readers to hike to grottos where the only sound is the trickle of water, crawl through hidden caves, commune with nature in ancient forests, stumble upon tucked away treasures like lonely graves, splash on secluded beaches and creeks, admire towering waterfalls and find historical carvings on rocks and trees that many walk past, but never see.
