Cell Tower Proposed on Farm Land in Wales

A new cell tower is being proposed in the Town of Wales to enhance wireless communication in the area.

Singular Communications and AT&T Mobility are proposing building a 300-foot tower at 12721 Warner Hill Road. It will be equipped with 4G technology and will have the ability to have more antennas on it in the future. The road to access the tower is an existing farm road that is 1,700 feet long. There will be a turnaround for vehicles, and all of the equipment will be enclosed in a 100-ft. by 100-ft. fenced area. There will also be a generator on-site for emergency power.

The proposal was presented by Christine Wrightman, a representative from the company, at a recent Planning Board meeting. She said that all of the specifications for the plan are in compliance with the Federal Communications Commission. If desired, shrubs could be added to the plan to disguise the base of the structure.

The board expressed concern about the potential of the tower falling because the surrounding area is designated wetlands. They would like more information about the exact distance the tower is to areas that are designated as wetlands. Board members would also like information about the decibel level of the generator that will be used when the power fails.

Wrightman said that she would be able to provide this information at a later date.

The plan was approved pending the investigation of the Wetlands and the generator decibel number.

The planning board also approved NateMeg Farm, LLC pending a land merger.

NateMeg Farm, LLC is a business proposal for a local wine and beer establishment in South Wales that will serve as a farm and a source to purchase craft alcohol. It would be located at 6846 Olean Road on land that is owned by Lloyd DeMario. He owns this land with his wife, and a portion of their lot that the business will be located on is in the process of being merged into one plot.

Plans to merge the lots were submitted to the Erie County Clerk’s office in April.

The establishment will only be open for tasting and purchasing what DeMario makes. It would not become a bar that serves alcohol. The town board had a public hearing for the business proposal on Aug. 11 and there were no comments from the public.
