Iroquois Soccer Keeps Teams Scoreless in Early Season Matches


After four games, the Iroquois varsity girls soccer team totaled 25 goals and had a shutout in every match. 

The team did play East Aurora on Oct. 14, after this newspaper’s publication. At the time, East Aurora had played one match, an 8-0 victory over Depew. 

For Iroquois, the wins have come against Pioneer (4-0); Maryvale (8-0); Lake Shore (6-0); and Cheektowaga (7-0). These have all been away matches. 

In the 80 minutes against Maryvale, Iroquois had 19 shots on goal. The first goal came a minute into the game by Brittany Esslinger. She was assisted by Maryalice Skutnik.

A short time later, Skutnik had her own goal, with an assist by Emily McLaughlin. 

It was the second half when Iroquois found the rest of its success. Esslinger had two more goals, as did Skutnik. 

Maddy Dennis would record the final two goals of the match. 

Against Lake Shore, Skutnik was the leading scorer with three goals. Alexa Tomaka Zulawski, Arrianna Blachowicz and Dennis all had goals, too. The team had 22 shots on goal. 

Iroquois goalie Tahlia Kosek had three saves in the match. 

On Oct. 12, the team was at Cheektowaga and again the Iroquois offense was powerful, recording 27 shots on goal. Skutnik was again the goal leader, with four goals. She also had two assists. Esslinger – two goals – and Blachowicz kicked in the other goals.

For the season, Skutnik has 10 goals and five assists. Her goals put her at the top of Section VI, with second place going to a Williamsville South player who has seven at this point. 

So far, Esslinger has five goals and Dennis has four. McLaughlin has two goals and four assists.
