Grunzweig is also a member of the Board of Directors for AADS and has used its services in the past for a family member.

In her presentation, Clapp outlined the services offered by AADS, located next to the Aurora Senior Center on King Street in East Aurora for the past 27 years. It has served 400 families in that timeframe.

In addition to being a place for those with age related cognitive disorders and conditions such as Parkinsons, the program has proven to be beneficial to those with depression caused by recent life changing events, she said. She explained that the need for services provided by organizations like AADS is growing rapidly as someone is diagnosed every 65 seconds with Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia can be caused by many reasons and medical conditions. She stated people with this disease seem to respond well to socialization efforts. She stressed the need for caretakers to have respite time to accomplish tasks and feel that their loved ones are safe while they are not in their presence.

The staff consists of four members, two of which are RNs and two who are Certified Nursing Assistants. Most who attend the program come twice a week at a cost of $52 per day, with resources available for those unable to pay the full amount. The program also has two vans to provide transportation within a 10 mile radius.

Those attending usually are there from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and have a variety of activities available to them. The usual numbers of clients is 18 per day with a current roster of 30 people.
