Letter to the Editor: First Amendment Auditors are Stealing Privacy

Dear Editor,

I was fascinated and terrified at the same time by the excellent reporting in the Advertiser on Feb. 17 about the so-called “online auditors” recording in public spaces. So this is where we are?

Our First Amendment rights invaded our privacy to the point of recording and filming in public? We the people don’t need to give permission? These recorders are acting provocatively, hoping employees/citizens will shield themselves from view. The auditor can post the video and make their case that the employee/citizen is hiding something. Imagine having someone lurking behind you recording in the library, post office or other public spaces. Imagine a high school student shelving books at the library after school and someone recording them. I would be hesitant to say anything to a recorder because of the unknown way they might react.

The people who loudly speak about their First Amendment rights do not honor citizen privacy with these recording actions. Enough is enough. We must get back to civility.
