Carolyn Anne Hitchings

April 18, 1927-July 21, 2022

Carolyn Anne Hitchings, who preferred to be called Anne, died peacefully on the morning of  Thursday, July 21. She was 95.

She was born Carolyn Anne Brooks on April 18, 1927, in  Brantford, Ontario, Canada. She met Stanley James Hitchings while he was on leave during World War II. They fell in love and were married in 1950, settling in Mr. Hitchings hometown of East Aurora. He predeceased her after 38 years of marriage.

Mrs. Hitchings lived a busy life in a calming way. She was active in Newcomers (aka REMOCWENS), the East Aurora Garden Club, and Saint Matthias’ Episcopal Church. She was an integral part of a close-knit community around the corner of Center Street and Oakwood Avenue.

She was a registered nurse and worked regularly at the Aurora Park Nursing Home. She volunteered at the Red Cross, the Episcopal Church Home, and the Millard Fillmore House. She also spent many years nurturing, teaching and providing loving care to her grandchildren.

Mrs. Hitchings loved her Algonquin Park vacations and winter trips to Florida. She was a consummate reader, a lover of gardening, and a celebrator of all holidays. She was full of compassion for all living things, and she lived a long life filled with helping those in need.

Mrs. Hitchings is survived by her children Thomas (Linda) and John (Linda); grandchildren Virginia (Bert) Rochelle, Charles (Michelle) and Jeffrey (Jocelyn Seitter); and great-grandchild Aurora.

Mrs. Hitchings generously made an anatomical gift to University at Buffalo’s School of Medicine: “Mortui docent vivos” – the dead teach the living.

To celebrate her life, family and friends will gather in her honor on Wed., Aug.10, at The Roycroft Inn in the Salon Room, South Grove Street, East Aurora from 5 to 9 p.m.
