Obituary: Joan B. Limburg, Caring Nurse, Treasured Family Matriarch, Seasoned Traveler


Joan B. Limburg

May 18, 1930 – June 10, 2020

Longtime East Aurora resident Joan B. Limburg, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 10.  She was 90.

Born in Buffalo and raised in Kenmore, she was a graduate of Kenmore High School. She earned a nursing degree from Deaconess Hospital, where she worked after graduating with honors. She stopped working at Deaconess Hospital to raise her family. In 1977, Mrs.  Limburg returned to nursing, working for Dr. Kenneth Eckhert, Sr., for the next 20 years. 

The former Miss Beer met the love of her life, Bob Limburg, on a blind date. The couple was wed on June 28, 1952 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo. They were married for over 60 years, when Bob passed away in 2012. 

Mr. and Mrs. Limburg moved to Eggertsville, where they had their four children who were the light of her life. In 1966, the Limburgs moved to their home on Geneva Road in East Aurora. In their 47 years on Geneva Road, she greatly enjoyed the many social and family events with their close neighborhood friends. Upon arriving on Geneva Road, Mrs. Limburg quickly earned the title of “neighborhood nurse” offering medical advice and attending to minor cuts and scrapes.

Mrs. Limburg was a great listener who was kind and caring. She also possessed a keen sense of humor. She loved being active and always had time for others.  She enjoyed hosting and attending social events. A beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, family was of utmost importance to her. In her later years, Mrs. Limburg especially enjoyed times when she and her four children were all together.  

Mrs. Limburg was an avid bridge player, playing with numerous groups. She also enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Elma Meadows Women’s Golf League. 

An excellent cook, Mrs. Limburg was known for her delicious almond filled kuchen and German potato salad. A skilled seamstress, she sewed her daughters’ dresses and matching festive pajamas for Christmas, her favorite holiday. 

Mrs. Limburg enjoyed traveling with her husband to Europe and all over the United States. After Mr. Limburg died, she continued traveling to visit family and friends around the country. She relished driving her car right up until the last days of her life.  

Mrs. Limburg was an active member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She and her husband were members of the Antique Car Club of America, The Model A Restorers Club, and The Transportation Club of Western New York.

After her husband died, Mrs. Limburg moved to the Stonegate Community where she cherished the comradery of her neighbors and community social events. In 2017, Joan moved into the Independent Living Community in Greenfield Manor in Lancaster. She enjoyed card playing and cribbage, as well as attending social events and YMCA exercise classes.

Mrs. Limburg celebrated her 90th birthday in May of this year. Due to the pandemic, the birthday party became a virtual event filled with many celebrations with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.  She declared, “my birthday was a great day!” 

Mrs. Limburg is survived by her four children Robert H. (Patricia Melvin) Limburg, Jr. of Lake Worth, Fla,; Janet (Robert) Marshall of Doylestown, Ohio; Barbara (Joseph) O’Donnell of East Aurora; and Julie Limburg of Cheektowaga; grandchildren  Jason, Stephanie, Jenny, Rob, Anna, Ezra, Mary, Henry, Erin, Chris, Emma, and Megan; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, William (Sheila) Limburg of Penfield; and a niece and nephews. 

In addition to her husband Bob, she was predeceased by her parents, Henry Beer and Virginia (Bartow) Beer Bixby.

The family will host a celebration of Mrs. Limburg’s life at a later date. 

Interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo was private.
