Public Hearing on Youth HuntingFree Access

A public hearing will be held Thursday, Aug. 5 regarding a proposed local law authorizing 12 and 13-year-old licensed hunters to hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow under the supervision of a licensed and experienced adult. Currently, 12 and 13-year-olds are able to only hunt deer with a bow or small game with firearms.

“Hunting plays a big part in the lives of many Western New Yorkers. It is important to teach these children at a young age, with proper supervision, so they grow into responsible, mature, and seasoned hunters. Other counties in New York State are lowering the age and it is time for us to do the same. Please spread the word and encourage your friends and family to attend on August 5th so we can get this law passed,” said Erie County Legislator Joe Lorigo in a news release.

The public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. on the 4th floor of 92 Franklin Street.

A copy of the local law can be found on the Erie County Legislature website at www2.erie.gov/legislature/.
