Variety Club Telethon to Feature Song By Iroquois Graduates

If you have tuned in to the Variety Club Telethon in recent years, you’ve seen the signature video they produce with a song playing over images of the kids who benefit from the generosity of the community. When you watch this year, either Saturday, March 9, from 6 to 11 p.m. on WGRZ Channel 2 or Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on WBBZ Channel 5 or online, you should know that the song accompanying the video, “A New Light,” was written and performed by Iroquois graduates and Marilla residents Ari Durkin and Jake Schoenle.

John Whitney is a familiar face around town. After retiring from three-plus decades as a U.S. Department of Agriculture soil conservationist, during which time he helped found the Western New York Land Conservancy, he signed on part-time as an agricultural educator with the Erie County office of Cornell Cooperative Extension. Three years ago, he accepted the role of chairperson of the Western New York Environmental Alliance (WNYEA) and has helped the 15-year-old coalition of environmental groups establish a prominent role at the forefront of environmental advocacy, collaboration and activism.

The SPCA Serving Erie County has an immediate need for foster care volunteers. Each year, thousands of dogs, cats and other types of animals come into the SPCA and are not ready to be put up for adoption. Foster care is a program specifically designed to place those animals into temporary homes where they can receive the care that they need.

Former East Auroran Betty Birch Celebrates Her 100th Birthday With a Surprise Party

As former East Auroran Elizabeth “Betty” Birch was wheeled into the Bistro of Fox Run’s main building in Orchard Park, the “Happy birthday,” greetings began to ring out. Much to her surprise and obvious delight, a crowd of 30 family members and friends had gathered for her 100th birthday. There was a cake, a slide show of family photos, much reminiscing and a proclamation read by County Legislator Lynne Dixon, who proclaimed February 20, 2024, Betty Birch Day in Erie County.

Local Man Saved By Quick Use of CPR, Automated External Defibrillator

Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin gained instant notoriety around the country and beyond as did trainers Denny Kellington and Nate Bresko, who administered CPR within seconds of the incident. Their actions, including the use of an automated external defibrillator saved Hamlin’s life. But did you know that Hamlin wasn’t the first person with a heart condition to have his life saved by quick action, CPR and an AED during a Bills game? East Aurora resident and building contractor Jay Metzger owns that distinction, and he’s happy to tell his story and make his pitch for the increased availability of AEDs.
