Petitions Available for Perspective School Board Members

It’s almost election time for school boards in New York. Elections are held during the budget vote, which is scheduled for May 21. The East Aurora Union Free School District Board of Education is composed of seven members. This year, the terms of school board members Joe Cassidy and Kimberlee Danieu will expire on June 30. The Iroquois Central School District school board is composed of seven members who are elected to serve a 5-year term. On June 30, the 5-year term of Mr. Charles Specht will expire.

Blood Drive Takes Place at East Aurora High School

This past Friday, March 8, the East Aurora High School’s Donate Life Club hosted its second blood drive of the school year. The blood drive took place in the high school library and gave any student 16 years old or over the opportunity to donate blood.

Iroquois Grad Qualifies for NCAA D1 Wrestling Championships

Other than actually winning a Division 1 national wrestling title, there is no bigger thrill than qualifying for one. Binghamton University’s Cory Day returns to the big stage for the second-consecutive year after reaching the podium at the NCAA Division 1 Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Association Championships this past weekend at the Sojka Pavilion on the campus of Bucknell University on March 8 and 9 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

East Aurora Finishes Strong at DECA Conference

The DECA team of East Aurora High School attended the 64th NYDECA State Career Conference from March 6 – 8 at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center in Rochester. The 15 attendees are members of the growing DECA chapter at the high school where students interested in management, marketing, finance, hospitality, tourism and entrepreneurship participate in community service projects, leadership development activities, social intelligence opportunities and learn about the business world.

Taste of Tech Event Provides Eighth-Graders Food for Thought

About 60 eighth-graders from East Aurora Middle School were given plenty of food for thought during the annual Taste of Tech event at Wallace D. Ormsby Educational Center on Center Street in East Aurora. Students picked three of the 13 Career and Technical Education programs and spent 20 minutes in each classroom. Instructors provided brief overviews of each program and offered hands-on activities, such as braiding hair on a mannequin, mixing cookie dough or petting a rabbit.

Fifteen Music Students from Iroquois Accepted to All County Honors Ensembles

The Iroquois Central High School music department recently announced the names of all music students, district-wide, who were accepted into All County Honors Ensembles this year. The Erie County Music Educators Association sponsors three festival weekends at which students have the opportunity to rehearse with master conductors and perform for their community at large.

Scholarship Available for students with Aspiring Careers in Food Service and Hospitality

The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops Friendly Markets is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program to support Western New York-area high school seniors aspiring to have careers in the foodservice, hospitality and culinary arts industries. This year’s program will award three $500 scholarships on behalf of the Taste and one $1,000 scholarship in partnership with Tops, which will be awarded based on the criteria and terms described in the scholarship applications.

Variety Club Telethon to Feature Song By Iroquois Graduates

If you have tuned in to the Variety Club Telethon in recent years, you’ve seen the signature video they produce with a song playing over images of the kids who benefit from the generosity of the community. When you watch this year, either Saturday, March 9, from 6 to 11 p.m. on WGRZ Channel 2 or Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on WBBZ Channel 5 or online, you should know that the song accompanying the video, “A New Light,” was written and performed by Iroquois graduates and Marilla residents Ari Durkin and Jake Schoenle.

Retired Teachers Offer Grants to Current Teachers

Retired Educators of New York/Western Zone (WZ) has announced a competition for educators to apply for grants. The four grants, each for $750, are affiliated with WZ Retired Teachers Founders’ Fund Inc. Grant applications must be submitted by March 29 to be judged by the Teacher Grant Committee with winners to be announced May 1. Area Superintendents were sent letters with information concerning these grants.
