Petitions Available for Perspective School Board Members

It’s almost election time for school boards in New York. Elections are held during the budget vote, which is scheduled for May 21. The East Aurora Union Free School District Board of Education is composed of seven members. This year, the terms of school board members Joe Cassidy and Kimberlee Danieu will expire on June 30. The Iroquois Central School District school board is composed of seven members who are elected to serve a 5-year term. On June 30, the 5-year term of Mr. Charles Specht will expire.

Blood Drive Takes Place at East Aurora High School

This past Friday, March 8, the East Aurora High School’s Donate Life Club hosted its second blood drive of the school year. The blood drive took place in the high school library and gave any student 16 years old or over the opportunity to donate blood.

East Aurora Finishes Strong at DECA Conference

The DECA team of East Aurora High School attended the 64th NYDECA State Career Conference from March 6 – 8 at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center in Rochester. The 15 attendees are members of the growing DECA chapter at the high school where students interested in management, marketing, finance, hospitality, tourism and entrepreneurship participate in community service projects, leadership development activities, social intelligence opportunities and learn about the business world.

Taste of Tech Event Provides Eighth-Graders Food for Thought

About 60 eighth-graders from East Aurora Middle School were given plenty of food for thought during the annual Taste of Tech event at Wallace D. Ormsby Educational Center on Center Street in East Aurora. Students picked three of the 13 Career and Technical Education programs and spent 20 minutes in each classroom. Instructors provided brief overviews of each program and offered hands-on activities, such as braiding hair on a mannequin, mixing cookie dough or petting a rabbit.

School Board Receives Social Studies Department Reports

At the East Aurora School Board meeting on Feb. 7, the board received a report on social studies classes across the district. The presentation included requests from each of the buildings for additional support and teachers would like to expand the program.

East Aurora School Board Receives Update on Construction

Sixty percent of the first phase of the 2022 Capital Facilities Project for the East Aurora Union Free School District will be completed by the end of April. The school board received an update on the continued progress during the Feb. 6 meeting, where the board awarded over $5 million in contracts towards the completion of Phase I of the project. The middle school drainage repair, which was an unexpected expense and included in Phase I of the overall project, will be completed within a month.

Education Foundation Seeking Nominations

The East Aurora Educational Foundation is seeking nominations for the James Ford Commitment to Education Award. The foundation will accept nominations detailing the candidate’s qualities through May 17. MusicFest and Hall of Fame Team Up With Music Scholarship

The Greater East Aurora Music Hall of Fame, together with East Aurora MusicFest, are planning to help make young local musicians dreams a reality by awarding one deserving music student at East Aurora High School a scholarship to further their studies at the university level.

Faculty Bartenders Host Fundraiser for Booster Club

The newest booster club at East Aurora High School, the Theater Arts Booster Club, packed the basement at Aurora Brew Works for a fundraiser last Thursday night. Slinging drinks were faculty members involved with the upcoming musical, “Mamma Mia!,” which will hit the stage on Feb. 9 through Feb. 11.

This year, East Aurora High School has chosen to perform “Mamma Mia” in February. Being a jukebox musical, “Mamma Mia” features songs from the band ABBA, such as “Dancing Queen” and “Gimme Gimme Gimme.”
