Sports opportunities are expanding for female athletes. For a third season in a row, East Aurora Little Loop (EALL) is offering a six-week session of flag football basics and friendly competition for athletes in sixth to eighth grade but this year it is taking the program a step further and offering sessions for female athletes only. EALL President Jamie Emmick said the organization is taking a cue from New York State, which just sanctioned flag football as an official spring sport for female athletes.

Valentine and Winfield Swim for EA/Holland at State Meet
Weston Valentine and Jacob Winfield of the East Aurora/Holland swim team swam at the New York State Boys Swimming Championship Meet at Ithaca College on March 1 and 2.
HEAT Participates in Indoor Track and Field Championships in Staten Island
Leading the way for the HEAT on the track at the state meet last weekend were both the boys and girls 4×800 meter relay teams who turned in season-best performances to place 12th and 13th respectively. In the field, Tyler Konter and Ryan Olesky both finished 15th overall as Konter placed in the long jump and Olesky in the weight throw, capping great senior seasons.
Work Ethic, Heart and Passion Characterize Blue Devils Run to Sectional Finals
The Blue Devils girls varsity basketball team, a surprise finalist for the Section VI Class B1 title, ran out of magic at the Buffalo State University field house on Sunday, March 3, dropping a 52-27 decision to Southwestern. The loss brings East Aurora’s record to an impressive 17-6. Not bad for a young team without any real superstars, a team that relied on grit and hustle as they tied for the ECIC Div. V title, then battled to edge Newfane 41-38 in the quarterfinals and Olmsted 34-26 in the semifinals.

Hockey Team Advances to State Competitions
The East Aurora-Holland varsity hockey team came up short in a game against St. Mary’s of Lancaster on Feb. 22 with a score of 1-4. The game against St. Mary’s for the Small School Title was played at KeyBank Center in Buffalo. Despite the loss, both teams will advance to the state championship series.
Blue Devils Season Closes in Sectional Quarterfinal; Boys Finish with a 14-8 Record
The Blue Devils boys varsity basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Akron team on Saturday, Feb. 24, and ended their season with a 57-48 loss at Akron in the quarterfinal of the Section VI Class B1 postseason tournament. The loss comes after a satisfying 72-59 win over Bennett in the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 22 at home, their 11th consecutive win going back to Jan. 26.
Blue Devils Edge Newfane in Quarterfinal Thriller 41-38; Face Olmsted in Semifinals
A big crowd filled the gym on Friday night, Feb. 23, for the Section VI Class B1 girls basketball quarterfinal between East Aurora and Newfane. The Panthers came in as a No. 7 seed with a 10-10 record against Gary Schutrum’s girls who, after posting a 15-5 record in the regular season, were a No. 2 seed. With 4.9 seconds in regulation, senior Megan Cassidy, with Arctic coolness, hit two no-doubt-about-it free throws and it was in the W column 41-38. The girls travel to Kenmore West on Tuesday, Feb. 27, for the semifinals against Olmsted at 7 p.m. with the finals at Buffalo State University on March 3.
HEAT Qualifies for State Meet
On Feb. 17, the Holland/East Aurora indoor track team, known as the HEAT, qualified two relay teams and four individuals for the New York State Indoor Track Championships, which will be at the Sea Breeze Complex on Staten Island in New York City in March. The Section VI State Qualifier was hosted by Houghton College at the Pegula Arena.

The East Aurora Blue Devils varsity girls basketball team finished the regular season tied for first place with Holland in ECIC Div. V. They split their home and home series with Holland, with each team ending up 11-1 in division. The record earned Coach Gary Schutrum’s girls a No. 2 seed in the Section VI Class B1 postseason and a home game on Feb. 23 against No. 7 seed Newfane who will come in at 10-10.
