Other than actually winning a Division 1 national wrestling title, there is no bigger thrill than qualifying for one. Binghamton University’s Cory Day returns to the big stage for the second-consecutive year after reaching the podium at the NCAA Division 1 Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Association Championships this past weekend at the Sojka Pavilion on the campus of Bucknell University on March 8 and 9 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

The Iroquois boys basketball team saw its season end on a sad note with a 51-45 loss to Depew in the semifinal of the Section VI Class A2 postseason tournament on Feb. 28. Held to nearly 20 points under their season scoring average, the Chiefs had a rough night shooting as they fell to 16-6 on the season.

It may be five months away, but it’s not too soon for Coach Steve Sokolski to be talking about the 2024-25 Iroquois girls basketball season with all the firepower he has returning. And next year is probably a more enjoyable conversation than reliving the Depew game on Tuesday, Feb. 27, that ended their season.

Lady Chiefs Dispatch Olean in Quarterfinals to Set Up Semifinal Against Depew

The Olean Huskies girls varsity basketball team took the long bus ride to Elma on Thursday night., Feb. 22, to play the No. 1-seeded Lady Chiefs in a Section VI Class A2 quarterfinal game. Unfortunately, the ride home to Olean must have been even longer after they suffered a lopsided defeat at the hands of their hosts 81-11. The win propels Iroquois into the semifinals against Depew on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Williamsville North.

Chiefs Edge Lew-Port 51-47; Advance to Semifinals Against Depew

As it so often does with basketball at any level, the Iroquois-Lewiston-Porter Section VI Class A2 quarterfinal game on Friday, Feb. 24, came down to the final few possessions. Lew-Port threw up a desperation three in the fourth quarter that missed, then an equally desperate jumper at the buzzer, and the Chiefs had the win. The No. 2-seeded Chiefs will face No. 3 Depew in the semifinal.

The Iroquois boys varsity basketball team enters the Section VI Class A2 tournament as the No. 2 seed with a 15-5 record after finishing second to Lackawanna in ECIC Div. IV. To nail down such a high seed, they put together an impressive string of victories at season’s end to finish 8-2 in division.

Lady Chiefs Finish Regular Season Undefeated Division

The Iroquois Lady Chiefs earned a top seed in the Section VI Class A2 basketball playoffs. They’ll open the postseason at home on Thursday, Feb. 22, against either a Tonawanda team they’ve beaten twice by a combined score of 160-57 or Olean, who comes to Elma with a 1-18 record in a quarterfinal matchup.

Iroquois Shares ECIC III Wrestling League Crown with Springville

With identical 5-1 records in ECIC III league matches this season, Iroquois and Springville shared the 2023-2024 division title. For Iroquois, it is the program’s first league title in a full season since 2019-2020. For Springville, the wait has been much longer: the Griffins achieved its first divisional championship for the program in 30 years.

Second Place Finish for Indoor Track at Iroquois

The Iroquois boys indoor track and field team placed second in the small school division at Section VI Team Championships held at Houghton College this past weekend. Senior co-captains Seth Wyzykowski and Cole Silliman turned in strong performances for the Chiefs squad.

Chiefs Edge Depew 68-64 in Cliffhanger as Brostko Nets 32

After a cliffhanger win over Depew on Feb. 10, the Iroquois Chiefs boys basketball team is neck and neck with Lackawanna for the ECIC Div. IV title as the regular season draws to a close this week. With their win over Depew, the Chiefs put the ball firmly in the Steelers’ court. The Chiefs are 7-2 in division, their two losses coming against Lackawanna.
