The New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III project has now completed two years of effort, with volunteer birders documenting 218 species confirmed breeding within the confines of New York State, including confirmation of successful breeding of a rare species in and around Aurora.
In a joint statement on July 14 from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, it was stated that people could take down feeders as a precaution, but it was not a recommendation, due to the lack of confirmed cases in New York State. People are encouraged to at least clean the bird feeders and bird baths.
At this point, bird scientists have ruled out several of the most likely diseases that could be causing bird mortality, such as salmonella. That’s why this disease is mysterious.
