B. Frank Dake, a lawyer with an interest in local history, was appointed as the first town historian in Aurora in 1919, when New York State began mandating that all towns and villages appoint a municipal historian to document, among other subjects, the local impacts of World War I. After Dake’s initial appointment, however, local officials either forgot about or ignored the state law until 1950, when officials re-established the office and appointed William S. Persons, Sr. to the post.
